Of approximately 200 different kinds of rhodiola, the (rhodiola rosea) is the best known and most researched. It grows in mountainous areas to a height of 4500 meters, in Asia and Europe, on poor soil and often even in arctic cold. During its short flowering period the approximately 30 cm high plant can be recognised by its yellow petals which gradually merge into red. It has an almost irresistably pleasant smell, reminiscent of roses, which is why the plant is also called rose root. In herbal medicine only the root of the plant is actually used.

Traditional folk medicine in Russia and the Scandinavean countries has made use of this plant for many hundreds of years. The Vikings used rhodiola to increase their strength and endurance and the plant can be used in cases of tiredness, high altitude sickness and to improve general performance level. In Siberia a bunch of rhodiola roots was a typical wedding present that through its powers of enhancement would guarantee numerous progeny.

Since the '70s, extract of rhodiola root has been officially recognised as a medicine in what was then the Soviet Union. It was perscribed for tiredness, lack of vitality, infections, memory disturbance and a general lack of energy. Again, in Scandinavean countries, rhodiola root is a well-known herbal remedy that is often used to deal with low performance, partial loss of concentration, stress and to improve mental resilience.

Many Russian and Scandinavean studies confirm the effectiveness of the rhodiola root, although the exact way it works has not been completely traced. It is assumed that ingredients in the rhodiola root extract promote the working of the conductors between different nerves (the so-called neuro-transmitters). These neuro-transmitters are in charge of processing information, thoughts and memories in the brain and the nervous system. They speed up the exchange of information between nerve cells and improve the adaptability of the body to accommodate mental and physical stress. Thus it supports memory, enhances concentration and awareness and through its ability to stimulate, increases physical performance.

Rhodiola may be taken in combination with Aronia berries (Aronia melanocarpa) also known as Black Chokeberries. Aronia berries with their high vitamin content and secondary herbal ingredients support and enhance the effect of rhodiola.

Whenever possible, rhodiola should be taken at breakfast or at some time in the morning.
