In the warm, low rainfall oases of Egypt, nard (Nigella sativa) has been grown over many centuries for medicinal purposes. Nard oil, as a funerary gift, has been found in the grave of the Egyptian Pharao Tut-Ench-Ammon. The prophet Mohammed ascribed great importance to nard oil in his book "Hadith". The seeds of Nigella sativa were already mentioned in the Bible and were added to bread in Biblical times to enhance its taste.
Egyptian nard seed belongs to the oldest known herbal medicines in the world. However, it has only been recognised as a medicine in Europe and America of recent years. It is mainly used in immunology and to increase resistance against infection.
The precious nardus seed contains a high concentration of active agents. The seed is harvested in southern Egypt and cold pressed on the spot. Egyptian nard oil contains nearly one hundred active agents, such as nigelline, nigellon, semohiprepinon, thymochinon, precious poly-unsaturated fatty acids and scarce oil fractions which, because of their ideal composition, have an optimal effect on the immune system. The poly-unsaturated fatty acids are converted inside the body into gammalino acids and prostasglandine. This slows down infection, balances the immune system and retards the formation of allergic mediators in cases of pollen and skin allergies.
Allergies are caused by an over-energetic immunity reaction, usually triggered by protein components in pollen or other allergenic substances. An over-active T-cell function leads to a strong immune reaction and typical allergy symptoms. Nard oil can stabilise the T-cell function and level out the immune reaction.
Nard oil can also reduce the narrowing of the bronchial tubes that takes place in asthma patients. Nigellon, the active agent in nard oil, acts to increase the size of the blood vessels and promotes the removal of waste products, which increases the active volume of the lungs and thus lessens complaints over lack of breath.
Nard oil also has a positive influence on the digestion and strenghtens the body's immune system in its fight against bacteria and viruses. It lessens the susceptability to 'flu, virus infections of the skin and mucuous membranes, and herpes viruses.
Original Egyptian nard oil, if cold pressed, is a pure natural product that prevents and treats a weak immune system. Nard oil needs to be taken on a regular basis over a considerable period.
